About

“A work of art is a world in itself reflecting senses and emotions of the artist’s world.” - Hans Hofmann

This quote resonates strongly with the artwork of Casey Mull. The work he creates is inspired by his own experiences and life-interactions, which he expresses through the use of narrative, symbolism, and pure artistic principles and processes.

Casey grew up in the foothills and mountains of North Carolina where he found his love for art and the creative process at a young age. After graduating from Appalachian State University in 2004 with a degree in graphic design, he worked in advertising before he was presented with the opportunity to move to China to learn a different language and be immersed in a foreign culture so very different from his own.

Little did he know (at the time) that he would end up living a portion of his life abroad, become a certified K-12 art teacher, travel to many countries throughout Asia and Europe, and start a family. These experiences, travels, interactions with friends, students and colleagues has had a great influence in shaping his ideas as an artist and teacher. Casey lived in China 3 weeks short of 18 years (2005 to 2023).

"Most projects I work on provides me the opportunity to experiment, synthesize, and problem-solve, pushing me to learn and grow with each work I create."

-Casey Mull

Casey worked as a middle and high school art teacher at an international school in Shanghai (Shanghai High School International Division (SHSID)) for 16 years, where he became the head of the high school art department. During this time he helped many students gain acceptance into art collages all over the United States, Canada, and Europe (Parsons (NY), SVA (NY), RISD (RI), SCAD (GA), Pratt (NY), SAIC (IL), Saint Martins (UK), just to name a few). He also taught both the AP and IBDP art curriculums and trained art teachers and colleagues for the majority of those 16 years.

Casey works with a wide range of media, materials, and processes, from 2-dimensional digital design, traditional and experimental painting, and 3-dimensional sculpture. He really enjoys the raw process of making art and most projects he works on provides him the opportunity to “experiment”, “synthesize”, and “problem-solve”, pushing him to learn and grow with each work he creates.
